What is Genesis Career College’s Cosmetology Program?

The Cosmetology program is a well-rounded program covering all phases of cosmetology, preparing the student for a career as a Licensed Cosmetologist or in a related field. The course’s overarching objective is to provide the student with a marketable skill upon completion of the prescribed course and to prepare the student to pass the State Board Examination and become a licensed Cosmetologist.

What skills will I learn in the Cosmetology Program?

Upon completion of the cosmetology course requirements, the graduate will receive the training to:

  • Project a positive attitude and a sense of personal integrity and self-confidence.
  • Project professionalism, visual poise and proper grooming.
  • Effectively communicate and interact with colleagues, supervisors and clients.
  • Respect the need to deliver worthy service for value received in an employment environment.
  • Perform the basic manipulative skills in the areas of hair styling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup and nail care.
  • Perform the basic analytical skills to advise clients in the total look concept.
  • Sit for the state board examination required for licensure.

What are the Cosmetology Program requirements?


The cosmetology course is a 1,500-hour program, covering a period of 50 weeks. The course is broken into three phases: General (300 hours), Chemical (600 hours) and Physical (600 hours).

What courses are a part of the Cosmetology Program?


The general courses will cover sterilization, sanitation and bacteriology, anatomy and physiology, shop ethics, personality and salesmanship, and state law.
300 laboratory and lecture hours


The chemical courses cover permanent waves, hair re-laxer, hair coloring, bleaching and toning, sculptured nails, and hair structure and chemistry.
600 laboratory and lecture hours


In the physical courses, you’ll learn about shampooing and rinses, hair and scalp care, hair shaping, hairdressing and styling, facials, arching, lash and brow tinting, and manicures and pedicures.
