Step 1:
Complete Professional Barber Training
Every state requires that barbers have a license, which means they must first complete an approved barber training program. So after you graduate high school or earn your GED, you can start looking for the barber school that’s the best fit for you.
Whether you’re looking for a large school, or a small school like Genesis, make sure you choose one that matches your personality and offers what you want out of your education. What will the training be like? How much hands-on practice will you get? It’s important to answer these questions before you decide where to enroll.
Step 2:
Get Your License
After finishing your barber training, find out which board oversees barber licenses in the state you live in, and find out what you need in order to take the certification test. Often these agencies will offer practice tests, additional online courses and other information to help you get ready for your exam.
The barber school you go to should also offer assistance (which is why it’s a good idea to pick a school that is really dedicated to helping its students). For information about what it takes to become a Master Barber in Tennessee, where Genesis has its barber school, visit the Tennessee Board of Barber Examiners.
Step 3:
Find the Career That’s Right for You!
Some barbers want to start out by renting a chair at a successful business. Others want to open up a shop, so they can be their own boss and have control over their schedule. Only you know which option is best for you—but whichever path you choose, take advantage of the expert advice offered by the career counselors at your barber school.
